Quince Girl's 2007 Hairstyle Forecast

Here’s what will be headlining the party hair trends in the months ahead.
Say adios to stiff and formal and hola to festive and free-stylin’ tresses in 2007, according to Antonio Prieto of the Antonio Prieto Salon in New York City. Antonio—a native of Valencia, Spain, who worked in Spain and London before heading to our shores and setting up shop in the heart of the fashion-forward Flatiron District—offers the following trends:

CAPTIVATING COLOR
Think bold and beautiful with lots of luscious Victorian/Baroque decadence (a la Marie Antoinette) for a look that’s luxurious and edgy.

• Brunettes stay mysterious and ultra-chic with stormy, cool browns and single process color. The multi-highlights look is so way over; what’s caliente is accenting your hair with bigger chunks of color or accessories.

• Wave bye-bye to the brassy blondes. Welcome in a subtler, serious side with matted tones of platinum and blue-grey. These muted, powder hues emulate a new type of elegance.

• Redheads stray away from “au natural” and instead embrace flushed, decadent crimson and copper tones, which embody the ultimate in luxury. Ardiente!

COOL CUTS
Modern, sexy, fresh and glamorous: A melding of different eras (1980s volume, 1920s finger-waves, Victorian glamour, the 1990s short crop). It’s all about individual style with shape.

• Long hair makes a dramatic statement with more texture and shorter layers around the face; this adds movement to tresses, making them appear lighter and less solid.

• Short hair is a modern, textured version of the late 1980s crop with softer edges for more movement. The “New Romantics” look is revisited: bi-Level or disconnected short cuts where hair is longer on top, cut shorter underneath, notes Antonio.

• Guy’s hairstyles are characterized by the edgy, rocker look. Styles are highly texturized with different lengths and an asymmetrical fringe that will give your chambelanes that special something.

SIZZLIN’ STYLES
• Imperfect, chaotic waves ·
• 1980s volume but with menos on top, a focus on the bottom ·
• Sleek high ponytails, French twists ·
• Headbands, ribbons, elastics
• Natural-looking extensions (a fab way to add non-permanent color and volume)
• Falls (if you don’t have the length in your own hair, these will let you fake it beautifully!)

PARTY UPDOS
Sleek against the head, high ponytails are hot this season, declares Adrian DeBerardinis, artistic director for the Antonio Prieto Salon, who adds it’s all about lots of volume in the tail.

With respect to volume, Antonio and his salon team are taking cues from the 1980s but updating it with a more modern take—the volume created by textured curls is now on the sides and bottom of the hair instead of on top. Finger waves have been deconstructed by being brushed out to create a rougher surface to the hair. “We like to call it ‘full-sized texture with chaotic waves,’” Antonio explains. “The overall look is not perfection. It’s a little disheveled and mussed, for a sexy look that appears to not have had a lot of time spent on it.”

Accessories are back, especially headbands, continues Adrian. For party-time styles, look for lacy or multiple layers of thin ribbons.
