Ready, Aim, Bella!
Rest is best. "It may be difficult with all the excitement, but try to get a restful night's sleep—at least eight hours—the night before," advises events planner Claudia Casillas, owner of Chiquita Events in Los Angeles.
Ready for my close-up. "Pick the best photographer and videographer you can afford and tell them in advance how you want to be photographed, letting them know which angles you prefer and what areas you are self-conscious about," Casillas counsels.
Hair flair. "Make sure your hair looks fantastic. It’s a wonderful confidence builder," says Ana Maldonado, a stylist and colorist at Beauty Plus Salon in Ramsey, N.J., who recommends clean, classic looks. "The attention should be on your features, not an over-the-top ’do or a drastically different haircolor."
Warm it up. To avoid the "ghostly" look of candid flash photos, choose foundation and powder in warm tones or opt for a light bronzer for a sun-kissed glow.
Primo primer. Use creamy, heavier-than-normal foundation in matte shades (dewy foundations tend to look greasy on film). Tenafly, NJ-based makeup artist Khuraira recommends evening out imperfections with concealer and setting with translucent powder.
Hide it. Be generous with concealer, especially underneath the eyes; try two coats in a shade that’s slightly lighter than your normal shade.
High on definition. If you’re going for the retro-look of white and black photography, keep in mind that good definition is key. Pay special attention to lining the lips, eyes and eyebrows, and achieving a well-applied blush. To define brows, Khuraira, who did those of this teen, suggests brow threading, which keeps brows natural.
Be color conscious. Avoid looking washed out by using slightly more makeup than normal. Ditch pale or brown shades. Instead, choose camera-friendly rose, red and pink tones.
Makeup no-nos. Avoid overly dark liner (it can look too harsh), bright-colored shadows, extremely glossy lips and high-contrast colors.
Make it last. Hands off your face! Without realizing it, you may be wiping away makeup. Use three light coats of long-lasting waterproof mascara.
Oil buster. Powder around the T-zone—the area around your nose and forehead—to avoid the shiny look from excess oil or from just being too excited, advises Michelle Ornstein of Enessa Wellness Spa in Los Angeles.
Relax! If you’re tense and nervous, your facial muscles will tighten and you’ll get that "frozen" look. Have someone give you a two-minute neck and shoulder massage and feel stress melt away.
Glam Girl Tips
Uplifting news. Nose too big in pictures? You’re probably dropping your chin. So, lift! Raising your chin will also make dark under-eye circles appear less visible.
Glassy stare alert. Close eyes between shots. Take a deep breath, then open them and flash your best mega-watt smile.
Face facts. Soften your expression and lighten your look by thinking happy thoughts, suggests videographer Carlos Mieles of Jersey City, N.J. To keep from appearing stiff, loosen up by moving around—tilt your head, change your expression, and position your face and body at different angles.
Love the one you’re with. Feel comfortable with the photographer and/or videographer. If you don’t trust or like him or her, it’ll show. Forget the camera and connect with the person behind the lens, urges Mieles.
Work it, chica! " This is your day to be a princess," says Casillas. "Smile, use good posture and walk with grace!" Khuraira Photo by Peter Fornabai
