REAL QUINCE
Quinceanera New Jersey The Quince Girl: Stefanie Caneva
Stefanie Caneva celebrated her quince twice with a 10-day trip to Disneyworld and Miami on her 15th birthday and a sweet 16 the following year. Here’s all the essential info on what went into her dream quinceanera.
The Proud Parents: Sanvra Rivera and Mario Caneva

The Dance Partner: Richard Figueroa

The Scene: A private party room at the Mediterranean Manor, a restaurant in Newark, N.J. The room was filled with pink and white roses and balloons.

The Quince Wore: An all white dress with spaghetti straps and tiny pearls shaped like flowers, long white gloves and a skirt with plenty of netting to create a poufy princess effect.

The Court Wore: Pink, white and black. The girls donned pink spaghetti strap dresses with embroidered crystals, and the boys sported pink shirts along with their black tuxedoes.

The Ceremony: Because Stefanie didn’t want anyone to see her, she arrived just in time to walk down the aisle. First, her court of honor entered, then her partner, her parents, and finally Stefanie. Her court formed a semi-circle around her table, which was decorated with an arc of pink and white balloons and roses. “When I walked in, I felt great,” Stefanie said. “The light was shining on me and everyone was so happy!” Once she was seated, her father came over and put her heels on, and her mother crowned her with a tiara. Her mother told her that the crown symbolized her little baby growing up to be a young lady and her father whispered in her ear that she would always be his little princess no matter what.

The Dance: Began when she waltzed with her dad. Toward the end of their dance, Richard asked if he could dance with her, and the court of ten joined in. Stefanie was nervous and excited to finally perform the choreographed dance that she and the court had practiced for over two weeks.

The Dinner: Served buffet style and included everything from ravioli to rice and beans and chicken to paella. Stefanie had a special three-tiered cake with her court on the bottom, a traditional doll to represent her in the middle, and an angel on top.

The Music: Ranged from Hispanic to Hip-Hop, so there was a little salsa, merengue and even reggaeton for adults and kids alike.

The Favors: Included fluorescent bracelets, sunglasses and mini maracas, which were given out by the DJ. But Stefanie’s special favors were wine glasses with a decorative flower and ribbon that read “Stefanie’s Sweet Sixteen.”

The Experience: “The experience was amazing,” said Stefanie. “It will always be in my mind as something I can share with my own children someday.”

Between headstands and sun salutations, Karla Lightfoot managed to co-write The BAP Handbook: The Official Guide to the Black American Princess. She is a freelance writer in New York and a recent graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism. A cross between a yogi, a style maven, and a bon vivant, Karla hopes to help women, young and old alike, find their inner princess by writing about fashion, food, fun and spiritual fitness.
